Alpha Omicron Pi was founded on January 2, 1897 in Barnard College of Columbia University in New York. Our four founders are Jessie Wallace Hughan, Helen St. Clair Mullan, Elizabeth Heywood Wyman, and Stella George Perry.

"The object of this fraternity shall be to encourage spirit of fraternity and love among its members; to stand at all times for character, dignity, scholarship, and college loyalty; to strive for and support the best interests of the college and universities in which chapters are installed; and in no way to disregard, injure or sacrifice those interests for the sake of the prestige of the fraternity or any of its chapters."

The Alpha Delta chapter was formed at the University of Alabama on February 25, 1967. Seventeen outstanding girls came together to bring a sorority to the UA campus that would continue to uphold the mottos of Alpha Omicron Pi. All of these same virtues are still held true to the hearts of the Alpha Delta members. The symbols and mottos were carefully thought out and created by the original founding members of the sorority.

Alpha Omicron Pi has one color, cardinal, which is also found in our flower and jewel. Our symbol is the sheaf of wheat which symbolizes our strength of togetherness.

Our flower is the Jacqueminot Rose, with its deep red color, it is the symbol of the essential and indispensable merit of fraternity. It was selected for its richness of color, beautiful fragrance, softness, and modesty of manner.

Where other fraternities place a crest, our founders found that the beauty and simplicity of the rose was enough. Additionally, crests are known to be medieval, while AOII was founded upon Greek ideals.

Our Jewel is the ruby, we often use the pearl and diamond, however they hold no special meaning to our Fraternity. The ruby is a symbol of friendship, love, royalty, and is considered one of the most powerful gems in the universe.

Our unofficial mascot is the panda, which has no natural enemies.

Our badge is composed of the three initial letters of our Motto, superimposed on top of one another, in order, giving Alpha Omicron Pi it's name.
